This is how Datacate got a great deal on data center space

data-centerDatacate, a regional colocation provider, was recently in the market for new colocation space, but had strict requirements: Space had to come at the right price, but timing was the wrinkle. The entire process – negotiating contracts, ordering hardware, constructing cages, and making everything ready for move-in — would have to be completed in just over a month while keeping costs down. That’s a tight timeframe for a full implementation when constructing cages alone often takes several weeks. Continue Reading…

How one retailer rolled out thousands of tablets to 600 stores across the nation

tablets-in-retailA small project for a large organization is often nothing of the sort. One recent example is a large national retailer’s plan to deploy 8,500 tablets to 600 stores.

As part of a mobility push, the retailer sought to equip thousands of store managers and other personnel with tablets. After working through a proof of concept with a number of options, the retailer chose a family of Microsoft Surface tablets (primarily Surface 3 devices) for their size, light weight, touch-screen capabilities, and ease of use in the store environment. The tablets allow managers to track inventory and monitor sales from anywhere – in the office, on the floor, or behind the register. Continue Reading…

The 7 questions you need to ask before starting a 1:1 initiative

one-to-one-initiativeHow can you ace a 1:1 initiative? It starts with doing your homework.

If your school district is planning a 1:1 initiative, you’re probably weighing your options against costs and security – and those are valid considerations (more on them later). But district officials might be failing to think about how devices will be used, the necessary storage, and durability. So what other hardware considerations should IT be thinking about?

For a lot of school districts, two hardware choices make the most practical sense: Chromebooks or Windows machines. Both choices are affordable and offer compelling features. But which one you ultimately choose depends on your students. Let’s study up on the questions you should ask when deciding between a Dell Windows device or Chromebook. Continue Reading…

The 3 biggest takeaways from VMworld 2016

technologiesThe cloud is here, but it’s complicating life for IT managers. VMware is attempting to cut the complexity out of the equation.

That was a theme of this year’s VMworld, as the company shared its vision of delivering any application, on any device, by leveraging any cloud. Many of the innovations debuted at VMworld can be categorized as stripping away the complexities and silos that arise through the use of different types of clouds.

Here are three major takeaways I learned from the 2016 VMworld. Continue Reading…

The SHI Summit: Cut the complexity out of mobile, security, and data center solutions

SHI Summit 2016 BannerWhy do we call it an IT ecosystem? Because everything is interconnected, and one weakness causes ripples up and down your IT environment.

Nothing that affects your network exists in a vacuum; for example, providing every member of the sales force with a tablet might cripple your network while confounding the network administrators and security architects maintaining a secure environment. Whether it’s adopting a mobile strategy, protecting the network from sophisticated security threats, or choosing the right data center solutions, any change will have repercussions throughout your entire environment.
