What 1,000 days of solar power looks like

solar panelsWhat clean energy benefits can you accomplish in 1,000 days? With the help of 3,000 solar panels installed on our company buildings and a set of green practices at our headquarters, we figured out the answer: Quite a lot, and with room to grow.

Since its installation in 2012, SHI’s solar energy array has generated more than 1.6 million kilowatt hours (kWh) of clean, renewable energy. The 2,100-plus solar panels installed on the roof of our headquarters in Somerset, N.J. generate enough energy in just one day to power a city block for an entire month.

And that doesn’t even take into account the 1,600 or so rooftop panels installed at our software and hardware integration center. The solar panels on this site create enough energy to account for almost half of the building’s energy usage.

In less than three years, our solar panels have generated a considerable amount of energy, and the amounts of greenhouse gases and other compounds we’ve avoided is also staggering: Continue Reading…

SHI, VMware join together to raise money for local charities

SHI and VMware supporting local charitiesThanksgiving is more than turkey, pie, and football; most importantly, Thanksgiving is a day to reflect and give thanks for the gifts and blessings we’ve received, and also to remember those who are less fortunate.

As a way to help those in need during the holiday, last week SHI and VMware partnered to raise money and secure goods for three worthy charities near SHI’s Central New Jersey headquarters: Summit Animal Rescue Association (SARA), a nonprofit animal rescue and placement organization; Elijah’s Promise, an organization that provides food to those in need, as well as education and job training in the food industry; and Resource Center of Somerset, a women’s shelter that provides help and hope for people affected by domestic abuse.

More than two dozen SHI and VMware employees traveled to New Jersey from around the country to spend a day shopping for and delivering supplies and donations designated for each organization.

Overall, SHI and VMware raised or donated over $21,000 among the three charities. We hope these donations will make the holidays a little bit brighter for those in need.

We couldn’t be prouder of the joint SHI-VMware team, and we thank everyone for their hard work and commitment to our community. We’re grateful to have such a dedicated and conscientious group of employees and partners, as well as customers. We wish a happy and healthy Thanksgiving to all!

As Windows XP nears its end, businesses weigh Windows 8 upgrade

Microsoft will cease to support Windows XP on April 8, 2014. The operating system’s product lifecycle will come to an end, Microsoft will stop producing security patches and other updates, and organizations will be faced with a dilemma: To continue using Windows XP, one of the most popular versions of Windows, despite the security risks of running an unsupported system, or to upgrade to the unfamiliar Windows 8 or another more recent OS version.

Microsoft, for one, would prefer businesses to move off XP and has made this one of its top sales priorities for fiscal year 2014, along with winning over businesses to the benefits of Windows 8.

The Windows XP end-of-life date will affect more than 10 million PCs. If your business accounts for any of them, you might want to start considering an upgrade. The following video will highlight the new features released with Windows 8, explain how Windows 8 affects your volume licensing agreements, and offer next steps for implementing Windows 8 in your organization.

Gila improves performance, scalability, cost structure, and disaster recovery with the SHI Cloud

Early concerns over the cloud’s security and privacy are proving no match for its efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and elasticity. And hybrid cloud infrastructure, which blends the cloud’s benefits with the security organizations desire, is taking hold.

In fact, a recent study commissioned by Microsoft and conducted by 451 Research indicates that 68 percent of businesses plan to adopt hybrid cloud models over the next two years.

Customers concerned about the security of sensitive or proprietary data can take comfort in the hybrid cloud’s use of in-house servers while capitalizing on the scalability and cost savings of a public cloud infrastructure.

Now one of the early adopters of hybrid cloud and, in fact, SHI’s first hybrid cloud customer, Gila, is speaking out about its IT goals and challenges, the solutions it implemented, and the benefits it has achieved by deploying a hybrid cloud strategy. Continue Reading…

SHI launches Backup as a Service to help customers manage Big Data

Big Data can offer organizations a true competitive advantage, creating new ways to enhance their dialogue with customers and partners, evaluate and improve marketing and pricing strategies, and identify new revenue opportunities. But it also creates challenges for the IT folks tasked with storing, backing up, and protecting the massive amounts of digital information.

As the amount of data grows, and organizations also deal with accelerated virtualization, regulatory compliance, strict SLAs, and shrinking backup windows, IT departments will be forced to rethink their data backup and recovery strategies.

To better help our customers navigate this environment, SHI has partnered with EMC to create a Backup as a Service (BaaS) solution. SHI Backup as a Service is an end-to-end software and hardware backup and recovery solution that’s delivered as a self or managed service.

It combines SHI’s Management and Support Services with EMC Avamar and Data Domain to provide high-speed data deduplication, predictable performance, and simple scalability. With BaaS, organizations can cut down network bandwidth issues, reduce backup time, and keep data safe at minimal cost, without upfront expenditure.

SHI BaaS provides fast, daily full backups of physical and virtual servers, desktops, laptops, enterprise applications, and network-attached storage (NAS) servers. It easily integrates with many existing environments — Oracle, NetBackup, Microsoft, and VMware, to name a few — so organizations don’t have to worry about a major process or infrastructure change.

SHI BaaS is available in several deployment models to meet the needs of every IT department: Continue Reading…

SHI joins Operation Shoebox NJ to spread holiday cheer to troops overseas

Earlier this month, our partners at McAfee joined more than 140 SHI employees and Operation Shoebox New Jersey at SHI Headquarters to assemble care packages for U.S. troops stationed overseas. We had been collecting supplies — toiletries, snacks, knick-knacks, Girl Scout cookies, etc. — since the beginning of September with the goal of mailing 500 packages to arrive in time for the holidays.

But on Dec. 7 (the 71st anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, a meaningful coincidence that was not lost on us), in a mere three hours, we exceeded that goal, packaging 647 boxes for our servicemen and women.

Operation Shoebox New Jersey is a great organization that has shipped 60,000 care packages over the past eight years to U.S. troops in the Middle East and around the world. In the below video, Executive Director Rod Hirsch talks more about the mission of Operation Shoebox and how volunteers (like you) can make it a success.

For a closer look, check out these pictures on our Facebook page.

From everyone at SHI, have a happy and healthy holiday season!

SHI features Managed Private Cloud at VMworld

It’s that time of year again. VMworld 2012 kicked off today in San Francisco, and the SHI team is busy making last minute preparations to our booth and breakout sessions on Workspace-as-a-Service, Mission-Critical Applications in the Cloud, and the Expectation Gap.

It was just a year ago that we unveiled our high-performance, industrial-grade SHI Cloud, but our dedication to developing innovative cloud solutions didn’t end then.

This year at VMworld, we’ll be showcasing our unique and HP-certified Managed Private Cloud (MPC). Managed Private Cloud is an on-premise, appliance-based solution that keeps the cloud onsite, in YOUR data center, behind YOUR firewall. All the while, SHI’s cloud technicians remotely monitor and support it from the security of SHI’s cloud data center. Because your data never leaves your premises, MPC is a valuable solution for state, local, and federal government entities, as well as academic and financial institutions that are governed by strict security and privacy regulations.

Our Managed Private Cloud YouTube video embedded below gives a good overview of what the solution is and how it works.

Intrigued? Want to learn more? Swing by booth #923. We’d love the chance to show you what our cloud’s got.
