How VMware vSphere licensing changes could affect you
It’s almost the end of the road for some VMware products. After June 30, organizations will be unable to purchase licenses for three VMware offerings:
- vSphere Enterprise
- vSphere with Operations Management (vSOM) Standard
- vSphere with Operations Management (vSOM) Enterprise
Though your organization can’t purchase new licenses for these products after that date, you do have several options moving forward. Let’s review.
Enterprise Plus vs. Standard
Starting July 1, organizations looking for a virtualization solution must purchase the higher tiered edition (Enterprise Plus) of vSphere Enterprise to maintain their environment. Standard is still an option, as is remaining on Enterprise while adding Enterprise Plus for new hosts, but both could introduce support and configuration challenges. SHI customers have the benefit of upgrading current licenses at a special, promotional rate until Dec. 26, 2016. So organizations have choices to make as they plan for the future.
Discontinued but not obsolete
The end-of-support date for vSphere Enterprise and vSOM Enterprise is March 12, 2020. Existing vSOM Standard customers will be entitled to vSphere Standard and vRealize Operations Standard at no additional cost.
What will change is that after June 30, customers on vSOM Standard will have to purchase vSphere Standard on a per CPU basis and vRealize Operations Manager Standard on a per VM basis.
