How the retirement of Microsoft’s Select Plus volume licensing program will affect you

Since its inception in October 2008, Select Plus has been the recommended transactional volume licensing program for medium-to-large organizations looking to procure Microsoft products and services. But with the introduction of cloud services, such as Office 365, and other new programs, licensing models continued to grow more complex and gain more complicated program terms. For that reason, Microsoft introduced its new volume licensing program vehicle, Microsoft Product and Services Agreement (MPSA).

Now, with a broader release of MPSA — including the availability of Software Assurance (SA) — scheduled for September 2014 and worldwide availability planned for July 2015, Microsoft announced it is retiring Select Plus.

Broader availability of MPSA is coming this fall.

The Select Plus licensing program will be phased out in two stages:

1. End of sale. In the first phase, which goes into effect July 1, 2015, Microsoft will no longer permit the sale of new commercial Select Plus agreements.

Commercial organizations can choose to migrate to the MPSA offering at the same price level as their current Select Plus agreement. Additionally, existing Select Plus customers with an agreement dated before July 1, 2015 can continue to procure licenses off their agreement. This announcement does not impact government or academic customers.

2. End of purchase. Beginning July 1, 2016, commercial organizations can no longer make purchases under their existing Select Plus agreements after their agreement anniversary dates. The agreement anniversary date is the day and month in which the Select Plus master agreement was signed.

For example, if a customer signed an agreement on Nov. 1, 2012, its agreement anniversary date would be Nov. 1, 2016. Therefore, this customer could continue to make purchases up until Nov. 1, 2016, but not thereafter.

Please note that SA purchased via License with SA or SA only will remain active through an organization’s third anniversary. Upon expiration, customers will renew under their new agreement of choosing, such as the MPSA.

As we begin to count down to the retirement of the Select Plus program, organizations should start to evaluate how to most efficiently procure and manage their software assets in the future. There’s no better time than now to contact your SHI Account Executive to discuss these changes.
